Political Facts

September 16, 2009

I wonder if it would be interesting, useful, or just insanely difficult to have a website/blog that compiled FACTS about our political system, or health care system, and other controversial topics so people could have an accurate baseline from which to discuss and debate them.

One of the things that seems to be missing from discussions in this country is such a baseline. The idea struck me when I was reading a post on Get Rich Slowly about the Federal Budget. The author, J.D., notes that in much of the political debate “[t]here’s just too much misinformation, and people offer their opinions as if they were facts.”

This has frustrated me for many years, watching politicians “debate” topics in primaries, watching family members argue for truly foolish “facts” that they learned from some extreme in the political system (right or left). There’s just too much misinformation out there, and it seems that there would be a way gather the facts together in a comprehensive place so that people could make use of them.

Which, of course, begs the question: does such an entity already exist in Wikipedia? Or somewhere else in the wide world web?
